Antonio González de Acuña
1630 – 22 February 1682

A brief biography.

Antonio González de Acuña was born in Lima, Peru, in 1630. He joined the Dominican Order in the priory of Lima. He was professor of theology, and zealous for the beatification of the Dominican Rosa de Lima (20.4.1586-24.8.1617), pronounced by Pope Clement IX on 15 April 1668.

Antonio de Acuña was appointed the 13th bishop of Caracas, Venezuela, by decree of Pope Clement X, 17 November 1670, and ordained bishop on 23 November 1670.

He founded in Caracas the Santa Rosa Seminary on 30 September 1673, and promoted the University of Caracas, realized in 1725.
The central part of the University is now the National Library of Venezuela.

Pope Clement X canonized Rosa de Lima on 12 April 1671.

Bishop Antonio González de Acuña died on 22 February 1682 in Trujillo, Venezuela. He wrote some books about Rosa de Lima.
