Beaterío
of Saint
Catherine of Siena
A brief description.
The
monastery Beaterío de Santa Catalina de Sena in Manila is founded by
sister Francisca del Espiritu Santo, O.P. in 1696.
Francisca
del Espiritu Santo was born in Manila as the daughter of captain Simon de
Fuentes and Ana Maria Tamayo del Castillo, 1647. After a short marriage without
children and since
than becoming a
widow, she devoted her life to the sick and poor people
and the youth.
She joined
the Third Order of Saint Dominic in 1682 and formed a small group of women, but
she met with opposition when she tried to found a congregation for Philippine
girls.
Thanks to
her example and perseverance she built her monastery Beaterío,
dedicated to
Santa Catalina de Sena in Manila, 1696.
She died
24th August 1711.
