Legends about Saint Dominic
SCULPTURES
In 1498, Queen Leonora of Portugal created the first
Misericórdia (House of Mercy) in Lisboa. A charitable, Church-run
institution, it became the model for many other institutions known as Santas
Casas (Holy Houses), that soon spread throughout Portugal and its overseas
territories (a 1994 estimate counted 500 of these institutions in Portugal). For
many centuries, and to a certain extent even today, the Misericórdias
would be the most visible face of
philanthropy (charity) in
Portugal. It is only in the XIX century that a more secular and liberal
inspired form of philanthropy takes hold.

The legends
There are many legends of Saint Dominic compiled by Gerard de Frachet from the Book of Epilogues of Brother Bartholomew of Trent, one of the Saint's first companions, and from the History of the Foundation of the Order, composed by Blessed Jordan of Saxony, and dedicated by him to his 'sons by grace and joint heirs to glory'. The Legend dates between 1255 and 1257.
The first representations of these legends we find – as far me known – on the sarcophagus of Saint Dominic in the basilica of Saint Dominic in Bologna by the sculptor Nicola Pisano (ca 1220-after 1278).
Fra Angelico depicted the same events in 1434-1435, on the predella of the Pala du Louvre EM 33: 33 B, C, D, F, G, and H. These are issued on a stamp of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta 2007.
The paintings on his predella of the Trittico di Cortona (1430-1436), EM 49: EM 49, H. I, K, L, N, O. is not used for stamps.

The altarpiece designed by Fra Angelico for the church of San Domenico in Fiesole shows the coronation of the Virgin surrounded by music making Angels and Saints in gorgeous raiment decorated with gold, kneeling below on a tiled floor.
Coloured marble steps lead to the Gothic throne on which more saints are standing ,seen from below. The Virgin is kneeling humbly to receive the crown from Christ.' Gabriele Bartz: Guido di Piero known as Fra Angelico. Könemann Verlagsgesellschaft, Köln 1998, p. 54.

The predella, of EM 133 (23x211 cm) - the Coronation of the Virgin, Pala du Louvre, 1434-1435 - shows events from the life of Saint Dominic, from the left to the right, EM 133 b-h.

EM 33 b: Saint Dominic asks Pope Innocent III to approve the Order; the Pope dreams of the Saint supporting the basilica of the Lateran; the Pope approves the foundation of the Order on 22 December 1216.
EM 33 c: The meeting with the Saints Peter and Paul. Once, while praying in the old Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome (1217), Saint Dominic saw a vision. The Apostle Peter handed him a staff, and the Apostle Paul handed him a book. Together, they spoke to him, saying, "Go and preach, because you have been chosen by God for this work." Immediately, it seemed to Dominic that he saw all his children preaching two by two throughout the world. From then on, Saint Dominic was often seen on the road carrying a walking stick and the Epistles of Saint Paul. He also carried the Gospel of Saint Matthew, and could recite these Scriptures by heart.

EM 33 d: Saint Dominic revives prince Napoleone Rossini (1257-1298) after his fatal fall from his horse.
EM 33 e: The entombment of Christ with the Virgin and Saint John.
EM 33 f: The dispute of Saint Dominic with the Albigensians and the miracle of the document with his text of his refutations in Fanjeaux. Saint Dominic tells Pierre des Vaux-de-Cernai, that he the little document with his opinion about the doctrine of theAlbigensians had to drop in the fire by order of the members of the jury. It remained not burned down, not even after three times." After M.-H.Vicaire: Dominicus, Dutch translation. 1957, p.89.

EM 33 g: The community at San Sisto (Rome) had grown very numerous. One day, Dominic was informed by the procurator that their begging had produced almost no food. He ordered the brethren, nevertheless, to gather at table for their meal. He then prayed and suddenly two young men or angels, looking mysteriously alike, came into the refectory to dispense a portion of bread and wine to each friar. The same procurator told of a similar miracle on another occasion.
