A brief biography.

Mario, Luigi, Cardinal Ciappi, O.P. was born October 6, 1909 in Firenze, and studied in the Seminary of Lucca and Arezzo. He joined Order of Preachers and was professed in Dominican priory of Santa Maria  della Quercia, Viterbo on October 8, 1926 and received the name Aloysius. He was member of the priory of San Domenico, Pistoia, and student of the Pontifical Angelicum Athenaeum, Roma. He was ordained to the Priesthood on Holy Saturday 26 March 1932 by His Eminence Cardinal F. Marchetti Selvaggiani, Vicar of Pope Pius XI
.
Following his ordination, Mario Luigi Ciappi continued his studies in Sacred Theology at the Angelicum, Roma, where he received his doctorate in 1933 in theology; thesis: 'De divina misericordia ut prima causa operum Dei.' He continued his studies with complimentary courses in the Universities of Fribourg, Switzerland, and the University of Leuven.
Upon completion of his studies, he began to teach moral and dogmatic theology at his alma mater, the Angelicum, until 1955. He also lectured on Thomistic aesthetics at the '' Institute Beato Angelico' in Roma. He was Faculty member and Dean of 'Theological Faculty of Pontifical Angelicum Athenaeum', Roma, 1935-1955; of 'Institute Beato Angelico', Roma.

In May of 1955, Pope Pius XII named him 'Master of the Sacred Palace', and he served five Popes - Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II.
The title 'Master of the Sacred Palace' changed to 'Theologian of Pontifical Household' by motu proprio Pontificalis domus, March 28, 1968. Attended I Ordinary Assembly of World Synod of Bishops, Vatican City, September 29-October 29, 1967. He was elected titular Bishop of Miseno, June 10, 1977. Consecrated, June 18, 1977, Roma, by Cardinal Dino Staffa, prefect of 'Supreme Tribunal of Apostolic Signature'.

He was created Cardinal Deacon, June 27, 1977; received red biretta and deaconry of Nostra Signore del S.Cuore, June 27, 1977.
Participated in the conclave of August 25-26, 1978 and in the conclave of October 14-16, 1978. Attended I Plenary Assembly of Sacred College of Cardinals, November 5-9, 1979. Opted for order of priests and title of 'Sacro Cuore di Gesù aggonizante' a Vitinia, June 22, 1987. Lost right to participate in the conclave when turned 80 years of age, October 6, 1989.

He died April 22, 1996, Roma, and was buried in Campo Verano cemetery, Roma.
