Buda
Priory and church of Saint Nicholas.
A brief description.
During the reign of King Bela IV the Dominicans built on the Castle Hill (Vár-hegi) of Buda a priory with church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The tower of the church was built between 1490 and 1500. After the attack by the Turkish, Buda was occupied from 1541 till 1686, and the Dominican priory and church were destroyed. Carol of Lorraine liberated the citadel of Buda on 02.09.1686. The Jesuits built on the priory-area a college and assimilated some parts of the cloister and the tower of the church. After the destruction in WW II the holding Hilton built a hotel with preservation of the north-side of the church and part of the tower. In this complex is placed the original monument of the Dominicans Julian and Gellert from 1937, - 1000th year of the foundation of the Magyar State - , former on the Fishermen's Bastion, Buda.
