Debrecen

Dominican priory and church

A brief description.

Debrecen is the second town of Hungary and is named  'Calvinistic Roma' on the east side of the Danube River.

The Dominicans soon built a priory with the gothic church of Saint Andrew, from which they were active till 1538. In that year the Protestants took over the Dominican Latin School behind the Andrew church.

In 1568 the priory and church were the centre of Calvinism and thousands of preachers received here their education. Through the town-fire of 1802 the church of Saint Andrew and parts of the priory were lost, but architect Josef Tallherr built a imposing church and parts of the priory were rebuilt.
